Coco Chanel’s Apartment
It is still surreal realizing that I was sitting in all the same spots Coco did. Discovering Coco Chanel’s apartment during Paris Fashion Week took my breath away. Occasionally, words fail – at this time to describe Coco Chanel’s apartment is understandably one of those occasions. Gabrielle once sat on those iconic marble steps. Her first show took place at the building in the 31 Rue Cambon that she has purchased in the 1920’s to house her successful fashion business. Hard to imagine walking footsteps of a legend. It’s the place where Karl Lagerfeld and his co-workers, artists get inspiration from, where they premises to develop ideas for new collections or campaigns.
Once you enter Coco’s apartment it feels like she just left minutes ago and it makes the semblance that her soul is still there. Everything she has put together in the apartment has her elegance and nothing is overloaded or too much. Her favorite colors; black, white and cream. But in her apartment it’s where chinese and baroque influences meet. There are numerous references to Coco’s life and brand CHANEL. The small golden Lion statue that stands for her sign, she was born on the 19th of August 1883.
Coco took inspiration from her residence – she created her quilted bag from the pillows on her 1920’s custom made suede couch. Mademoiselle Coco stayed until her death in 1971 with the exception of her exile years in Switzerland in a suite at the legendary Hotel Ritz which is located at the Place Vendome. The apartment served only as her office and entertainment quarters and was regularly sprayed with Chanel N°5, it is a tradition that continues lavishly today. “An interior is a natural projection of the soul.” – once said by Coco Chanel.
