Discover Chanel. Part III. 07/03/17
Chanel’s Métier d’Art – this photo diary is about the art of craftsmanship and insides of the Parisian atelier. I would love to start with she story of Gabrielle Chanel’s adoration of the camellia flower which began with a single blossom and a gift from a charming man who captured her heart forever. And yes here’s where it comes to life at the Métier d’Art. So, firstly we headed to the Les Ateliers Lognons followed by the visit of Lemarié and Maison Lesage. Everything that is made here is made by artisans which also means it is made by hand. It has been one of my heart’s desires to get a look behind the scenes.
The embroidery, handmade flowers and intricate feather work are all created here. Gabrielle Chanel first started to work with Lemairè in the 1960s, when she commissioned the company to make her signature camellia. Each of its 16 petals shaped by hand with hot curling irons, a single camellia takes on average an hour to make. The level of dedication, precision and quality of work at the craft ateliers is phenomenal. None of the work is done by machine, and the couture craftspeople are proud of what they do; they are well trained and highly skilled. Speciality of Maison Lemairé – Feather and Camellias. Many of the world’s top haute couturiers have relied on the feather specialists for decades. Chanel acquired Maison Lemarié in 1996.
Les Ateliers Lognons is specialized in pleating, it was established in 1945 and purchased by Chanel in 2013. Some of the most memorable features of Chanel’s couture and Métier d’Art collections are the intricate pleating details, each fold lovingly handcrafted within its atelier. Maison Lesage is specialized in embroidery and has been around since the beginning of couture, considered to be the best embroidery atelier in the world. The highly skilled artisans work in centuries-old workshops to bead, pleat, embroider and embellish the couture collections of Chanel. There is a undefinable atmosphere once you enter the ateliers. A magical place full of art, of inspiration, of discipline and calm.
The home of 75.000 embroidery samples.
